Kolkata: The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police intercepted a truck late on Wednesday night and seized 867 kg ganja from North Port area.According to police, on Wednesday, STF officials were informed by a source that some sort drugs or narcotic element will be smuggled into the city. Working on the information, the police came to know about a truck which would be carrying the said consignment. At night, a police team was waiting for the truck on Strand Bank Road. Near the crossing of Strand Bank Road and Kali Prashanna Singhee Road, beside a Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) drainage pumping station, the police team intercepted the truck. During the search, STF personnel found plastic gunny bags inside the truck. After opening one of the gunny bags the police found ganja. The driver of the truck identified as Gobardhan Gond of Damoh in Madhya Pradesh was detained. Later, the police found that there were 40 gunny bags containing ganja weighing about 867.2 kg. A specific case was initiated against Gond and he was arrested. It is suspected that drug and narcotics racketeers are again trying to smuggle in drugs in order to sell them in the city and smuggle out to Bangladesh. Earlier, the STF had conducted consecutive raids and drugs and narcotics elements in huge quantity were seized. Several persons were arrested. Since the last two months smuggling of such elements had gone down a lot. However, the STF has again stepped up its vigilance in order to curb such illegal trade.
