In-N-Out matriarch Snyder dies at age 86

first_imgEsther Snyder, who with her husband, Harry, founded the popular In-N-Out Burger chain and served as its president since 1999, died Friday in Baldwin Park. She was 86. She was born Esther Johnson in 1920 in Illinois and graduated in 1947 from Seattle Pacific University with a degree in zoology. She served as a surgical nurse in the WAVES during World War II. She met Harry Snyder in 1947, when she was working as a day manager at a Seattle restaurant, where he sold baked goods. They married the next year and moved to Baldwin Park, where they opened the first In-N-Out. Esther Snyder initially helped with the cooking and later took over the bookkeeping and paperwork for the expanding chain. After Harry Snyder died in 1976, son Rich took over the company, with his older brother, Guy, serving as vice president. When Rich was killed in a plane crash in 1993, Guy Snyder became chairman. Esther Snyder continued as president after Guy died in 1999. In 1984, Esther and Rich Snyder founded the Child Abuse Foundation, which later became the In-N-Out Burger Foundation. She was also active in other philanthropic organizations. Private services are planned.
